The Grey Area

Design Statement:

One of the apparent features of collective housing that differ from private housing is the presence of communal spaces. This project aims to bring about The informality of communal spaces in the form of nooks and nodes to provide the users with varying spatial experience and to encourage a more dynamic lifestyle.

To highlight the passage from private to communal spaces, spatial transition is explored through the implementation of distinctive, deep thresholds. The threshold has the potential to provide as a grey area in which the users can determine how they engage with the space, ultimately encouraging users to Occupy the transitional space for longer periods of time – this reinforces the sense of community.

By combining these spatial qualities, this design will provide a cohesive nature to transitional spaces whilst retaining the language within private and communal spaces individually.
